A Little Bit Of Ireland
I came across a live recording of Same Oul’ Town recently and I thought what a great slice of simple life. I have never been much of a Saw Doctors fan but I did a bit of a dive into their catalog and have a new appreciation for them. It hit me that a lot of Irish music is set in a folksy style that I can appreciate. When I was a kid my dad would play the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem and while I won’t subject you to that, you can see the same storytelling style in a lot of Irish music. Lisa Hannigan adds to that feel . Of course Van Morrison has to be on the playlist and believe me it took awhile to make a decision on which song of his to add. Van is also on this playlist with the Chieftains celebrating their very Irishness. The same is true of U2, although only Bono appears twice. If You Wear That Velvet Dress is a U2 song they did on their Pop album but I prefer the version with Jools Holland. And I think I should comment on another artist who is here twice. Glen Hansard was in The Frames and Falling Slowly is from the Once soundtrack. I came across Jessie Buckley as I was going down a Bernard Butler rabbit hole. There’s something about every selection here but I’ll hop to the end for The Pogues. Their Fairy Tale of New York is one of my favourite Christmas songs and it’s kind of personal. My paternal grandfather, a man I never met, was a member of the NYPD choir. I chose Dirty Old Town for two reasons. One it’s a bookend with Same Oul Town thematically and two, it is quintessentially Irish. I almost need a pint to hear it!
As always, enjoy!
