This Week’s Memory Road Trip

I have listened to an awful lot of cover versions over the years, and a lot of the time I didn’t know they were covers. The reason for that, I think, is that when you cover a less known song, you have a better chance of making that song your own. And you don’t run the risk of ticking off people who love the original. This playlist isn’t about those covers. No, this is about people who decided to cover well known songs, hits, classics. Each in its own way brings a different vision of a fantastic song. For no particular reason the first 5 are by Canadian artists beginning with Big Sugar’s take on Gary Wright’s Love Is Alive. That’s followed by an instrumental version of Sweet Baby James by David Bradstreet that comes from an entire album of instrumentals of JT songs. Marc Jordan does a jazz version of a timeless Tears For Fears classic and then Cowboy Junkies do an interesting take on Neil Young’s Don ’t Let It Bring You Down. I’m so glad that Kathleen Edwards is back making music after taking time off to run a coffee shop and she does Supertramp proud. As for the rest of the playlist, my personal highlights are Josh Ritter’s version of Dire Straits' Brothers In Arms and Thea Gilmore’s take on Springsteen’s Dancing In The Dark. Thea is one of those artists who has never really reached a level of appreciation but I think I could listen to her sing anything. Oh and Diesel does a terrific Fire And Rain. In the end the thing is a great song can be interpreted in so many ways and in a way it’s a little weird because with these songs anyway you can sing along the first time you hear it!
